5 Ways to Keep Your Pet Safe This Halloween
The spookiest time of year is quickly approaching! Halloween is a fun and exciting time for the whole family, and many get their pets in on all the action. If your pup (or kitty!) is heading out to partake in all the festivities with you this year, keep these tips in mind to keep them safe and happy.
1. Don't Feed your Pets Halloween Candy
This may be the most common-sense tip on the list, but it's very important and bears repeating. Most candy your kids will receive this Halloween is laden with sugar, chocolate, or xylitol, and can make your pets very sick. Store that stash somewhere secure, away from industrious kitties and pups who may go sniffing for a treat.
2. Make Sure your pet is Properly Identified
Anything can go wrong while you're out and about trick-or-treating on Halloween night. If your pup gets spooked by a scary mask or loud noises, he may bolt and run away before you can catch him. Make sure your pet has proper identification on her collar and her microchip information is up-to-date.
3. Plan Costumes Appropriately
If you plan to put your pet in a costume, make sure it fits properly and will not hinder your pet's mobility. Ensure that there are no pieces that your pet may be able to chew off or any that interfere with your pet's sight, hearing, breathing, or ability to eliminate if needed. Never force your pet to wear a costume if he or she appears uncomfortable or distressed.
4. Keep Glow Sticks and Glow Jewelry Away from Pets
Dogs may be attracted to and want to chew on these fun accessories. While the contents are not necessarily toxic, they can be irritating to your pet's mouth and stomach, and will likely cause distress and anxiety.
Consider your Pet's Behavior
Not every pet is of the disposition needed to endure the sights, smells, and sounds of Halloween festivities. If your pet is particularly skittish, anxious, or territorial, they will likely be much more comfortable at home where it's quiet and your pet feels safe. They will be more than happy to greet you and the kids with excited kisses and tail wags when you get home.
